Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Only death or repayment will fulfill the obligations. Only then will the beads disappear.
Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer to make it happen. He’s a man who can get you anything you want … at a price. And everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects.
But for one of his clients, he’s never asked for repayment. Not until now. When Callie finds the fae king of the night in her room, a grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, she knows things are about to change. At first it’s just a chaste kiss—a single bead’s worth—and a promise for more.
For the Bargainer, it’s more than just a matter of rekindling an old romance. Something is happening in the Otherworld. Fae warriors are going missing one by one. Only the women are returned, each in a glass casket, a child clutched to their breast. And then there are the whispers among the slaves, whispers of an evil that’s been awoken.
If the Bargainer has any hope to save his people, he’ll need the help of the siren he spurned long ago. Only, his foe has a taste for exotic creatures, and Callie just happens to be one.
I’m apparently on a Laura Thalassa kick!
Callie is a siren. She is a myth, a legend, and a rarity. As a child, she managed to get into some trouble which required help from The Bargainer. Callie didn’t know what she was getting herself into and after each request for help, she was left with a black bead on a bracelet, that now as an adult takes up most of her arm. As suddenly as The Bargainer came into her life, he leaves for 7 years. Now he is back with a vengeance. This time he’s isn’t back down from what he wants and that is Callie.
The Bargainer isn’t all that he seems. He is so much more. After 7 years away from Callie he is back and is claiming repayment for his generosity. His kingdom is under attack and he needs Callie’s help. Only she can glamour the human’s and pull the answers they need out of them. As they work together, it becomes obvious that the 7 years apart did nothing to pull them apart. It actually made them grow closer.
I loved this story, I was swept in and pulled under the darkness of this book. The Bargainer is an amazing character and so is Callypso. I wanted to know more about the werewolf, Callie’s boyfriend. I feel like he was added for a reason and hopefully will come back. The only issue I had was the end and how rush it felt. The climax came and then boom gone. Overall I did enjoy the story and loved the world created and the characters in the world. I felt like I was in the Kingdom of Night with them, looking around at things, talking to people. Yeah I was there.
FYI – I will be finishing this series! I already started book #2 – A Strange Hymn
