The Emperor of Evening Stars by Laura Thalassa

In the beginning, there was darkness.
Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave.

But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.
From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

And this is how Des becomes the King.

All his life he hid. His mom hid him, he hid his magic, he hid. Living in the shadows. No wonder he is the King of Darkness. The shadows are part of him, they are his soul. When he destroys those who seek to destroy him, he goes into the shadows again. This time to find himself. This time to find himself, put the puzzle pieces back together before ascending. Des takes his time, then learns of his mate. A slave. A human slave. This can not be true. He is King. King’s do NOT have slave soulmates.

His search for her is futile. Until she finds him. Calling to him for a deed she can’t undo nor would she want too. A deed a long time coming. Friendship, trust, and love. She binds herself to him, but in doing so, pushes him away for years. When he does come back, is she ready for him? Is she ready for what their life will be like?

Ready or not here come Des.

I love this backstory of Des. Seeing him at his lowest and building himself up. He went through so much, you feel his pain, his heartache. Is so sad. The love story between him and Callie, is sad too. He’s fighting everything that he is and wants to protect her and not scare her off. Taking it slow is killing him, but it’s what she needs. He’s doing the thinking for both of them and it’s back firing to all hell.
